Vitamin B12

B12 levels in the blood are worthless. You need a urine Methylmalonic acid level to determine if B12 is adequate and functioning.

There are 4 stages of vitamin B12 deficiency. Serum levels only go down in the 4th stage.

The most sensitive marker is holotranscobalamin or holotc. A 2013 study compared vegetarians vegans and omnivores. 11% of omnivores were depleted, 77% vegetarians, and 92% of vegans.

Deficiency can cause neurological damage.

Homocysteine levels found higher levels in vegans and vegetarians, possibly higher than in people with heart disease. Ref- Chris Kesser.
