Collagen Comes in Different Types
- Type 1 - Connective tissue of skin, bone, teeth, tendons, ligaments, fascia, organ capsules
- Type 2 - Cartilage
- Type 3 - Connective tissue of our organs (liver, spleen, kidneys, etc.)
- Type 4, 5 - The separating layer between epithelial and endothelial cells as well as between skeletal or smooth muscle cells (basal lamina), kidney glomeruli, lens capsule, and Schwann and glial cells of the nervous system.
Where to get it
- Soup made from bone, joint, tendon, foot, or hoof stock,
- Lysine helps both with the formation of collagen and helps to prevent breakdown excretion [1][2]
- Lysine is also important for collagen cross-links that are important for bone health [3]
- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) Supplementation

Absorbency Details
- Take with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to increase absorbency, ideally right before a workout [4]
- Vitamin C hydroxylates (adds hydrogen and oxygen) to the amino acids lysine and proline to form a precursor molecule called procollagen that is later packaged and modified into collagen outside of the cel. [5]
- Glycine supports collagen production
- Organic Triphala helps in the production of collagen [6][7]
Light Therapy
- Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) was shown to boost collagen production in rats healing from third degree burns [8]
Topical Applications
- Essential oils might might help inhibit certain enzymes from eating away the collagen and the elastin when used topically (diluted with an oil like cononut, jojoba, or MCT
- Retin-A (Tretinoin) might help with collagen synthesis and protect from breakdown when exposed to UV radiation [9][10]
- Note: there are also problems with using topical retinoids.
What Interferes With It
- Flouride disturbs collagen synthesis [11]
Random Notes
- Might help with L-Tryptophan absorption? http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/89303-l-tryptophan-collagen/
- Muscles get knots, similar to tangled hair. Rolling is good to get them out. Need pressure+pain to break them out. If knots stay too long they can become adhesions; replacing muscle tissue with collagen [12]
