Methylene Blue
Contents
Summary
Helps mitochondria to produce ATP without oxygen (upregulates anaerobic ATP production), which improves cellular metabolism.
Top 3 Uses

How To Take It
Dosage
4mg/kg
Timing
morning, evening, with or without meals
Important Notes
What It Is
How It Works
MB accelerates the normally slow NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) methemoglobin reductase pathway[3], the mechanism by which physiologically produced methemoglobin is reduced. However, MB can also cause methemoglobinemia when administered at a higher dose[4], due to its strong oxidizing capacity which produces equilibrium between hemoglobin and methemoglobin. Thus, MB has hormetic effects on oxygen saturation of hemoglobin, based on its concentration. At low doses, MB converts methemoglobin to hemoglobin, while at higher doses, it has the opposite effect, converting hemoglobin to methemoglobin.[5]
Uses
Improving Memory
- A single dose increased MRI-based response in brain areas that control short-term memory and attention. 7% Increase in correct responses[6]
Treating Methemoglobinemia
General Purpose
Conditions It Treats
- Alzheimer's Disease - MB has been shown to attenuate the formations of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, and to partially repair impairments in mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism. It also plays a role in improving neurotransmitter production.[7]
Warnings
How To Take It
Dosage
- The dose for maximum cognitive enhancement seems to be ~4mg/kg.[5]
- WARNING: MB seems to have a hormetic response. Taking more than 4mg/kg lowers the effect, and more than 10mg/kg has been shown to inhibit cognitive function.[5]
Where To Get It
- Science.bio sells independently lab tested batches for a reasonable price.
